Technical Career Field (TCF) Program

woman using calculatorThe Technical Career Field (TCF) program is a two-year training program for participants to develop technical skills to meet VA's mission critical needs. TCF offers full-time employment positions with national funding to cover salary, benefits, training, and travel associated with the program.

Eligibility Requirements

College graduates, VA employees, Veterans, and outside applicants are eligible to participate. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and be willing to relocate upon program completion.

Qualifications vary by specific career field. Visit the VA Careers site for more information by specialty.

General Training and Developmental Experiences

TCF program training is accomplished under experienced VHA professionals known as preceptors. Each career field has a specific Individual Development Plan (IDP) and training plan that the participant will accomplish during the two-year training program.

Application Process

Employees at various levels within VHA annually apply to become TCF preceptors from August through October. Each medical center preceptor is responsible for the recruitment of their participant – therefore, interested applicants should apply directly to the VA medical center in which they are interested. Participant recruitment typically begins in February, and hiring is from June through September. Approved sites are posted to VA Careers in late February.

To search and apply for jobs by occupations or location, go directly to the job search feature on USAJOBS (keyword search: TCF, Pathways Recent Graduate). Opportunities are posted at various times throughout the recruitment period.
