Cemetery Administrator (Director) Intern Program

National Cemetery Administration LogoThe Cemetery Administrator (Director) Intern Program is designed to teach interns about VA’s mission to serve Veterans, Service Members, and families through burial and memorialization. The Cemetery Administrator (Director) intern serves during a 12-month training program in leadership, cemetery management, and operations.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Eligibility Requirements

You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Applicants are subject to a background/suitability investigation. You must meet the time-in-grade requirement by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.


Work is performed both in an office setting and outside in various weather conditions. The work may require physical labor such as long periods of standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, lifting, and reaching. Applicants will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics (KSAOs):
  1. Ability to analyze a variety of interrelated operational facts and data
  2. Ability to interpret and apply a wide-range of laws, rules, regulations, directives, and policies
  3. Ability to deal effectively with people of varied backgrounds and varying levels of understanding
  4. Ability to effectively communicate in writing
  5. Ability to communicate orally

General Training and Developmental Experiences

Participants serve as a Cemetery Administrator (Director) Intern in the National Cemetery Administration (NCA). The program requires both on-the-job, hands-on training and academic training at the National Training Cemetery Center in St. Louis, Missouri, as well as at several National Cemeteries across the U.S. The participant will be provided training and assignments in subjects such as Safety, Equipment, Facilities and Grounds Maintenance, Budget, Interment Operations, Leadership, Team Building, Oral and Written Communications, Strategic Planning, Procurement/Contracting, and Equal Employment Opportunity.​

Program Size: 
The program can accommodate up to 15 interns.

Service Obligation: 
The primary goal of the training program is to enable participants to apply knowledge of cemetery operations and regulations in order to independently perform as future Cemetery Directors. Must sign training agreement, mobility statement if selected, and a Continuation of Employment Service Agreement. Some travel may be required.

After Program Completion

Upon completion, interns will be assigned to one of the 131 National Cemeteries nationwide. Locations will be determined upon successful completion of the training program. Interns can be assigned as Assistant to Director, Assistant Director, or Director.
