Is CareerCare the right course for me?
CareerCare is recommended for employees who are at GS levels 5-8 or equivalent wage grade levels, but anyone can take it! The positions and work environments discussed in the course are specific to the healthcare field, so CareerCare will be most beneficial to employees who are currently working, or would like to work in, a healthcare system. All employees who complete the course will receive credit via the VA Learning University's Talent Management System, or TMS.
What will I learn?
During the course, you will learn the fundamentals of career development by completing interactive lessons. Lesson topics include:
Self-Reflection: Begin by thinking about what you do best, how you learn and the type of workplace you most enjoy.
Career Interest Survey: Explore your individual preferences to identify jobs that best match your strengths and skills.
Job Research: Uncover careers and job opportunities at VA.
Goal Development and Planning: Determine where you would like to go in your career and make a plan for how you will get there.
What can I do to make the most of this course?
There are several things you can do to improve your CareerCare experience:
Dedicate time each week to the online lessons. You may complete the course on your own schedule, but you will benefit most if you work at a steady pace.
Print your coursework and take notes. Seeing information in writing will help you remember what you have learned.
Enlist a mentor or coach. Discussing your career with someone you trust can help you make decisions or work through challenges. If you do not have a mentor and would like to be connected with one, please contact your facility's Designated Learning Officer, the Coach or Mentor Certification Program Coordinator at your facility or your supervisor to request help identifying someone who is a good match for you.
How much of my time will be required?
The majority of your coursework will take place online, which allows you to complete lessons at your own speed and at times of the day that work best for your schedule. On average, the time commitment is about 8-12 hours altogether. Depending on your pace, the course will take from a couple weeks to three months to complete.
