Supply Management Specialist (Manager)

Supply Management Specialists monitor and oversee all operation components of Sterile Processing Services (SPS) programs, including administration, policy, quality assurance monitoring and compliance. Supply Management Specialists are critical to VA’s ability to provide uncompromising care and assistance to Veterans who need treatment. They help VA to be the leading provider of care to Veterans and make a positive difference in the lives of those they serve.

Knowledge Areas

Supply Management Specialists need to have a thorough understanding of:
  • Principles involved in the decontamination, high-level disinfection, and sterilization processes

  • Surgical and clinical instrumentation, reusable medical equipment, and sterile supplies

  • Surgical case cart assembly process

  • The mechanics of testing, disassembly, and assembly of reusable medical equipment (RME)

  • Medical and surgical supplies required for specific procedures

  • Medical terminology to communicate with medical, engineering, and vendor personnel

  • Sterile inventory organizing, labeling, storage, and rotation

  • Quality assurance process monitors related to the Sterile Processing Department

  • Policies and procedures for infection prevention and control

  • Various sterilization methods

Training & Developmental Experiences

Grade Range: GS11-GS13

Developmental Experiences
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for processes related to reusable medical equipment (RME)

  • Recommend purchase and replacement for the standardization of equipment/instruments based on industry standards, trends, and medical center reprocessing capabilities

  • Generate quality assurance criteria and appropriate response plan for corrective actions

  • Generate quality assurance criteria related to the case cart management system

  • Implement procedures for corrective actions on non-compliant outcomes of Infection Preventionist findings

  • Approve and monitor the implementation of a new review process for monitoring appropriate storage conditions for reusable medical equipment (RME) to include organizing, labeling, storage, and rotation of stock

  • Recommend purchase and replacement for required sterilization equipment based on industry standards and trends

  • Participate in the Commodity Standardization Committee
