Pathways Internship Program

​The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. Eligibility Requirements

​Pathways Internships are open to current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. The Internship must be related to the Intern's academic career goals or field of study. General Training & Development Experiences

Some Pathways Internships are eligible for conversion into full-time, permanent Federal careers upon their completion. If the Internship is eligible for conversion, the Intern must meet the following requirements:

  • Completing at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
  • Completing your degree or certificate requirements
  • Meeting the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  • Meeting agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and
  • Performing your job successfully

Program Size:
There are currently 317 Pathways Interns.

Service Obligation:
To be eligible for a permanent Federal career, Interns must be on an eligible appointment (please consult your hiring manager or HR specialist to determine if your appointment is eligible), and must successfully complete the program’s requirements.

Current Career Fields:
All career fields are eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, but the internship must be related to the Intern's academic career goals or field of study.

After Program Completion

After successful completion of the program requirements, the individual may, at the agency's discretion, be converted to a term or permanent appointment.
